Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Fire Extinguishers are distinguished by a black coloured band around the top of the cylinder. Carbon dioxide is a non-conductive and non-corrosive gas used to reduce the amount of oxygen available to the fire. Regular dry chemical fire extinguishers contain a siliconized sodium bicarbonate based dry chemical with free flowing and non-caking additives. Economical Class B & C protection with lower initial cost and recharging. This chemical smothers fires in flammable liquids & pressurized gases and is electrically nonconductive.Multipurpose dry chemical or ABC fire extinguishers contain a specially fluidized and siliconized mono ammonium phosphate chemical. It chemically insulates Class A fires by melting at approximately 350°F, coating the surface to which it is applied. It smothers & breaks the chain reaction of Class B fires and will not conduct electricity.

Often termed ‘multi-purpose’ extinguishers as they can be used on FLAMMABLE SOLIDS (such as paper, wood, plastic etc) FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS and FLAMMABLE GASES (but it is NOT usual to extinguish the flame of a gas fire). Also safe on LIVE ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT. HOWEVER we do not recommend dry powder extinguishers for use INSIDE BUILDINGS as they are very messy and can damage electrical and mechanical equipment.
